  2. Azerbaijan Republic, USSR, even though it is
  3. entirely outside the Azerbaijan boundary,
  4. being separated from it by the Armenian
  5. Republic; area 5,500 sq km/2,120 sq mi;
  6. population (1986) 272,000. Taken by Russia in
  7. 1828, it was annexed to the Azerbaijan
  8. Republic in 1924. 85% of the 278,000
  9. population are Muslim Azeris who maintain
  10. strong links with Iran to the south.
  11. Nakhichevan has been affected by the
  12. Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict; many Azeris have
  13. fled to Azerbaijan, and in Jan 1990 frontier
  14. posts and border fences with Iran were
  15. destroyed, and Nakhichevan declared itself
  16. independent of the USSR.
